I just read Hara Estroff Marano's article in Psychology Today magazine & you seem to have a similar approach to this issue.
Funny, I have been on a quest for 25 years to perfect myself, starting with "I could be wrong" & now at "Rethink Perfect".
Early on people used to say to me that I am aiming for perfection & I would reply that I was not aiming for perfection as much as I was aiming to be less imperfect. I do believe that growth, improvement, investigation, examination or simply learning is inate in us.
It sounds like to me that you & Hara may be throwing out the baby with the bath water.
I agree that seeking perfection in others is not the answer but helping each other out & pointing out our imperfections & being able to put up our hands to be able to admit them is imperative to what I want from a relationship.
I do believe that perfection does exist & according to my modle:
http://desirelines.com.au/relate/images/agree3.gif
when we are working towards getting an agreement. We seem to cross over perfection for a split second at least, which is a nice thought.
Anyway I believe that it is only fair to seek to perfect ourselves when we have the tools that we have agreed to use for thejourney.
My brother & I have been on this journey for some 22 years & I have developed 6 tools to help, called the 6A's. I do hope to write a book some day called Rethink Perfect, How to Complain Responsibly & Prepare for the Failures.
